June 14

So far you have read research from authors at various stages:  you heard from Jeff who is in the coding and analysis stage; you read a data analysis chapter from Andrea and Carol; and you read manuscripts submitted to a journal.  How can you relate this to where you currently are in your stage of research, whether it’s generating questions or collecting and coding data?  How do these actual pieces of real live research relate to what you have read regarding the how-to of qualitative research?  This blog is meant to be critically reflective of your own experiences and to draw on what you are learning in the class.

EE 2nd Review

May 31
This blog also has two parts:
  1. Read the second draft of this piece, now titled “Can We Say the R-Word?”.  Write about the changes you see the authors make from the first piece to the second.  What are some specific improvements?
  2. Read the reviews of the second draft.  What do you notice about the tone and content of these reviews?  Why do you think the editor rejected this piece again?

EE 1st Review

May 29:
This blog has two parts:
  1. Using the process that we discussed in class on May 24th, write a blog post review of “English teacher educators’ collaboration to counteract colorblind dispositions among White pre-service teachers.”  Here is the criteria from English Education, the journal to which this was submitted:
When evaluating theoretical/empirical articles for publication in EE, reviewers consider the following dimensions:
  • Significance/relevance to English teacher education/teacher learning
  • Theoretical/conceptual framework (connections to relevant research/scholarship)
  • Methods (if manuscript is an empirical study)
1.     Appropriateness to questions
2.     Adequate description of methods (including data collection and analysis)
3.     Rigor of method
  • Findings/conclusions are literature- or data-based
  • Overall advancement and contribution to the field: Originality and innovativeness of the argument
  • Writing style/composition/clarity

  1. Then, look at the reviews.  What did you learn from other reviewers?  What could you add to the conversation about this particular piece?

L, L & G Chapter 6

  • The authors write, “Methodology is inevitably interwoven with and emerges from the nature of particular disciplines (such as sociology and psychology) and particular perspectives (such as Marxism, feminist theory, and queer theory” (2011, p. 97).  As you look at the ontologies (theories of existence) and epistemologies (theories of knowledge) of the various paradigms (p. 102 & 103), describe which paradigm most resonates with your beliefs and experiences in education.
  • What do we need to discuss/ define in order for you to feel as if you have a clear understanding of each paradigm and the differences among them, particularly in reference to research questions and methodology?
